Dear Bearded Confidant,

I was just wondering if it is safe to have unprotected anal sex if neither partner has AIDS or any other STD's. And would a shower help get rid of any of the bacterias that are present? And what can some of the bacterias cause?

Dear Anonymous,

Unprotected anal sex is one of the most profoundly intimate forms of sharing two men can experience.  The fact of the matter is that all forms of intimate contact involve some sort of risk.  In other words, there's no such thing as safe sex, whether condoms are used or not.  If both partners are free of diseases to their best knowledge, then of course the risk of any kind of infection is diminished.  But there can always be unknown germs hiding somewhere.  I always recommend that lovers take as many safety precautions as possible so that they can enjoy sexuality without fear.  For a complete guide to every aspect of anal sex, I recommend the book The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex For Men.
